Concern in the cinema: a pirate would have found how to pirate films in theaters

While they were released exclusively in theaters, some films ended up illegally on the Internet, with image quality close to Blu-ray. The hackers would have had access to the hard drives of a cinema. It now remains to be seen in what way.

Pirates mainly use two methods to pirate a film: either the feature film is directly filmed in a cinema, or the pirated film comes from a legal source, such as a streaming platform or a VOD service.

But could a new hacking method be about to emerge? The question really arises given the specifics of a recent series of hacks. Indeed, as reported TorrentFreaka mysterious pirate group called NaNi has released several films on the Internet. All these films were labeled “Theater”, or “cinema room” in French.

Among these films are the very disturbing The Substance with Demi Moore and the very violent Terrifier 3. Now let’s clarify one important thing: all these films were shared illegally even though they were released exclusively in theaters. As such, The Substance has been available illegally since October 12, so its digital release is set for October 31.

You will then answer us that people used a camera in a cinema, but these films were broadcast illegally in an image quality close to Blu-ray, which completely excludes this theory.

But how is this possible then? In reality, it is difficult to give an answer with certainty. However, according to TorrentFreak, the NaNi hacker group may have managed to connect to the Digital Cinema Package (DCP), a container of feature film files used by cinemas.

Then comes the question of the security of these hard drives present in cinemas: did the pirates manage to bypass encryption and the various security systems or did they have a physical source within the cinema itself?

Regardless, this case is causing a lot of buzz in the piracy world, and some organizations that fight piracy in Hollywood certainly need to look into this case very closely. It now remains to be seen whether other films released in theaters will suddenly be available on the Internet.
