This famous science fiction film celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The opportunity to return to a cinema classic which was quickly overshadowed by a series released 3 years later. Is it really a sequel or an independent work? Back to these questions.
If I talk to you about stars and space, you immediately think of Star Wars. But today, we’re talking about the science fiction film Stargate, the stargate published in 1994 and directed by Roland Emmerich. Intended to possibly be the first film in a trilogy, it ended up standing alone and a sequel appeared in 1997 in the form of a series: Stargate SG-1. Both contents are currently available on Prime Video but it is the series that has remained in the imagination of people and science fiction fans.

A success without a second opus?
The film is directed by Roland Emmerich. Known for Independence Day or The day afterthe German-American director was convinced of having found the new Star Wars and the new saga that would revolutionize the world of science fiction. It must be said that the story attracts attention. In 1994, a young genius Egyptologist, Daniel Jackson, finally solved the enigma of the gigantic ring of stone and steel discovered 70 years earlier. He then reveals a passage to another planet and decides to cross the stargate with a crew. They then see a new world ruled by a tyrant.
The film was a success with almost $200 million in worldwide box office revenue, including $70 million domestically. In France, it has more than 2.5 million admissions. No feature-length sequel was released, but a series, led by Richard Dean Anderson, appeared only 3 years later: Stargate SG-1. The episodes offer a direct sequel to the film and take place 1 year after the end of Stargate. With more than 10 seasons and 214 episodes, the series ended in 2007. It is well received by fans (3.5/5 on Allociné based on more than 35,000 reviews) who see it as the logical continuation of their favorite opus. But Roland Emmerich will never support this project, explaining that he would have done something completely different and would have taken another path to be able to tell his science fiction universe.
Still no triology?
Last year, Amazon regained the distribution rights to the film and series. They spoke of their desire to revive certain remakes of franchises including Robocop, Blonde’s Revenge et Stargate. The project nevertheless seems very far from Emmerich’s occupations. In fact, he had already tried to relaunch a sequel to his film with the help of screenwriter Dean Devlin in 2014 but without success. Questioned by an American media outlet, he even replied that he no longer wanted to work on it and that he had abandoned the idea. Fans of the franchise will therefore be disappointed to learn this. Stargate SG-1 et Stargate, the stargate are both available on Amazon Prime Video.
