The Canadian Screen Awards kick off Tuesday with the first in a series of awards celebrating the best in Canadian film, television and digital media, leading up to Friday afternoon’s gala hosted by comedian Mae Martin.

Tammy Frick indicates that the flagship event will not be broadcast live, but “delayed”: the nominees will be celebrated during two hours of festivities in front of a live audience, part of which will be broadcast on CBC and CBC Gem that evening .

Mme Frick says Academy ‘listened’ to comments on last year’s pre-recorded TV show, which drew criticism from industry figures including Eugene Levy, who argued Canadian creators deserved a celebration live.

This year’s television broadcast will include recorded material for special tributes and highlights from this week’s galas, but Mme Frick assures that “the majority of the show will be very much like a live show.”

She adds that the academy is also focusing on performing clips from the show on social media, which will have “the energy of an in-person show.”

“I think the tone of the show will be very different, because it will be very current,” M saidme Frick Tuesday.
