Faced with the success of Amazon’s Rings of Power series, Netflix also plans to focus on an adaptation of famous fantasy books with a first Narnia film planned soon.

The Chronicles of Narnia according to Netflix

In 2018, Netflix acquired the rights to adapt The Chronicles of Narnia, the literary fantasy saga by CS Lewis published between 1950 and 1956, and immediately announced the arrival of several films in its catalog. Years later, still nothing. Or almost. In 2023, after the resounding success of Barbie, director Greta Gerwig announced that she would take the direction of the first part of this new adaptation. The filmmaker has reportedly signed an agreement with the platform to make two films which would cover at least volume 6, a prequel which tells the origins of the portal leading to Narnia.

Although little information is circulating at the moment, it should be noted that the project is on track. Thus, according to the website of the Film & Television Industry Alliancefilming of this first film should begin next January, in New Zealand. We know that the country, renowned for its extraordinary landscapes, has already hosted Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. We can therefore expect to find a little bit of Middle Earth in this Narnia film.

A unclear situation

But if the filming seems to be assured, it is difficult to see clearly behind this production, which, according to rumors, is experiencing some problems. So, according to several American mediaGreta Gerwig reportedly stood up to Netflix and questioned their deal. The filmmaker would oppose the decision of the platform which would have chosen to release these films directly in streaming, with a release limited to a few theaters in the United States to ensure eligibility for the awards. For her part, Greta Gerwig, who actively campaigns for the preservation of cinemas, would like this adaptation to be released in theaters before arriving in the platform’s catalog. To be continued.
