The American jeweler has four treasures in its archives which illustrate the splendor of the kings of France, but also contributed to its own prestige at the end of the 19th century.e century. They almost never come out of the trunk, but were shown to us in New York last month.
The meeting was set one morning last September, in New York, in the historic Tiffany & Co. store on Fifth Avenue, recently renovated from top to bottom. A promise is then made to us to « take out jewelry from the archives, very rare »… What ? How much ? The teams remained evasive, only pointing out that they were parts « from the 1887 sale of the Crown Jewels ». This precision was enough for us to rush in with our eyes closed! For jewelry lovers, this state sale remains a major event in the history of jewelry. Small reminder: the “Crown Jewels of France” were established in 1530 by François Iis with a few diamonds, enriched by the various successive sovereigns (in particular by Louis XIV), diminished by the famous theft of 1792 and finally increased in an expensive manner by Napoleon and Napoleon III. But, at the end of the 19th centurye century…
