German students from the Françoise Héritier college were able to enjoy a screening at the Olympia and discover the German film “Tom und Hacke”.

Like every year, the Goethe-Instituts in France, one of whose missions is to open students to German culture, organize the “CinéAllemand” festival, a cinema program for young audiences. The selection of films was made by a Franco-German jury based on the subjects covered and the high cinematographic quality of the productions.

For the first time, students from the Françoise-Héritier college were able to enjoy it thanks to the Olympia cinema in L’Isle-Jourdain, which is now a partner of the Goethe-Institut in Toulouse. 6th, 5th and 4th grade German students recently attended a screening of the film “Tom und Hacke” by Norbert Lechner. The director was inspired by the works of the American author Mark Twain and chose the context of post-war Bavaria, the most favorable period for him to give his young heroes adventures, like by Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

A murder in a cemetery

Tom and Hacke take the audience to the Germany of 1948, before the “Stunde Null” (financial reset of June 20, 1948 which then allowed the restart of the economy), in which poverty, fraud and above all the market reign. black, the common thread of the film. Young children witness a murder in a cemetery. To avoid getting into trouble, they swear to remain silent. But when Muff Potter, who is innocent, is named as the murderer, Tom freely chooses to reveal everything, even if his friend Hacke prefers to keep the truth quiet. Courage, ingenuity and friendship are at the center of this German adventure.

After the session, as part of a discussion about the living conditions of people in post-war Germany, the students asked many questions. They expressed the desire to repeat this experience with a new film proposed by the Goethe-Institut next year.
