Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at 8 p.m., on L’Hermine Theaterin Saint-Malo, hosts a labeled show by Paris 2024 – Cultural Olympiad and title Bread and games. It is a “farce on the relationship between sport and power”, specify the Theaters of Saint-Malo in a press release.

This “artistic-sporting” show, featuring Shakespeare, amateur athletes and pop culture, takes its title from a quote from the Roman satirical poet Juvenal:

“Bread and circuses and the people will be happy. »

Between fascination and distrust

“This sentence says it all our ambiguous relationship to sport, between fascination with the athlete’s performance and distrust of the power capable of recovering sporting exploits for its own ends. But it also says everything about our relationship to the theater, to art, sometimes complimenting the king, sometimes causing revolt. This common point establishes the need to create a sporting spectacle, a theater match. »


THE showproposed by the company Sortie 23, is directed by Raouf Raïs.
