Daniel Day-Lewis comes out of retirement to star in a very special film (and we can’t wait)

Seven years after retiring, the brilliant Daniel Day-Lewis returns to the sets for a very special feature film.

Daniel Plainview (There will be blood), Bill the Butcher (Gangs of New York), Abraham Lincoln (Lincoln)… Daniel Day-Lewis has collected major roles throughout his prestigious career. A demanding and secretive actor, known for his extraordinary involvement in his roles, Daniel Day-Lewis forged his legend and became one of the greatest actors in the history of cinema, while regularly distancing himself from his art .

In 1997, for example, the actor decided to trade his job as an actor for that of a shoemaker. Then, after returning to Gangs of New York by Martin Scorsese and having competed for more than fifteen years, the brilliant Daniel Day-Lewis ended his acting career in 2017 after Phantom Thread by Paul Thomas Anderson. Since then, he has lived happy days away from the sets… but to everyone’s surprise, he will return to the cinema for a special film.

A glimmer of hope for cinema

The return of the king

To begin with, Deadline reported that Daniel Day-Lewis was spotted on the set of his son Ronan Day-Lewis’ debut film, titled Anemone. Information which was then confirmed by an official press release from Focus Features and in particular a speech by the president of the studio, Peter Kujawski:

“We are thrilled to partner with a brilliant visual artist like Ronan Day-Lewis for his first feature film alongside Daniel Day-Lewis as a creative collaborator. They have written a truly exceptional script and we look forward to bringing their shared vision to audiences alongside the Plan B team.”

Deadline

“This is the last time. Next time, I won’t come out of retirement”

At this stage, obviously, and given the long-kept secret, we don’t know much about the film. However, in this same press release, Anemone is described as an exploration “ complex relationships between fathers, sons and brothers, and the dynamics of family ties“. In addition to Daniel Day-Lewis, the film will include Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley (How to Have Sex) et Safia Oakley-Green (Out of Darkness).
