Jouffroy d’Abbans returns to his lands

Culture. Born at the castle of Roches-sur-Rognon, the Marquis de Jouffroy d’Abbans invented steam navigation in the 18th century. More than two centuries later, he was back in Roches-Bettaincourt through the magic of the Amis de Buxières film.

Born in Roches-sur-Rognon on September 30, 1751, Claude, François, Dorothée marquis de Jouffroy-d’Abbans was the inventor of steam navigation. It is on this subject that Les Amis de Buxières, producers of the feature film “A tout vapor” worked for more than three years to produce a documentary. They presented it on Sunday April 21, in the Roches-Bettaincourt village hall, with the participation of the municipality.

Nearly 150 people came to watch the show. From the reception, the spectators were put in condition by actors in 18th century outfits. In an atmosphere that was by turns studious and friendly, many got to know or revisited the invention of steam navigation, which was then only possible by the force of the wind, the exploitation of river currents or human or animal traction. .

The well-prepared staging made this historical moment easy to understand, from the birth to the death of the engineer. The cleverly delivered humorous inclusions were appreciated by the spectators and highlighted by sustained laughter. At the end of the screening, loud and long applause rang out to the delight of the directors and organizers of this cultural event.

The debate which followed confirmed the interest, the astonishment, revealing the love life as well as the great tenacity to bring his invention to fruition of the tumultuous Jouffroy born in the village castle and who sailed on the Saône a boat with moved side blades by the boiler of Denis Papin. We can also see his statue on the Battant bridge in Besançon.
