Cannes 2024: the tears of Juliette Binoche, the slap in the face of Zaho de Sagazan… A 100% female ceremony

She said she was proud that this 77th Cannes Film Festival was honoring “powerful women”. This Tuesday, May 14 evening, Camille Cottin, in the role of mistress of ceremonies, welcomes several on the stage of the Palais des Festivals for a resolutely feminist opening evening.

Quite tense but with an inspired text, the actress quickly sets the tone. While she spins the metaphor of a “parallel world called the Cannes vortex”, she blurts out that, “since #MeToo”, “the nocturnal professional meetings in the hotel rooms of all-powerful gentlemen are no longer part of the habits and customs of Cannes.

Accompanied by an orchestra, she continues: “Here, appearances are deceptive. Under the tuxedos and princess dresses sometimes hide punks and resistance fighters.” To present Greta Gerwig, the director of “Barbie” and president of the jury, the actress revealed by the series “Connasse” and “Ten pour cent” uses another well-felt formula: “She exposed the world box office by tackling the biggest villain of all time: the patriarchy.” In perfect English, she explains to the American filmmaker that she is “a gift” for the Festival.

“Congratulations to the dancing queen ! », says Juliette Binoche

A little later, it was Juliette Binoche who paid tribute to Meryl Streep, by presenting her with an honorary Palme d’Or. “If the contributions of women in history still remain too invisible, yours are not,” assures the French actress. Before continuing, in tears: “You changed the way we see women in the world and in cinema. You gave us a new image of ourselves.”

“Congratulations to the dancing queen ! », finally says Binoche after a long speech and to the music of ABBA. Meryl Streep then thanks the actress – “You are such a great talent, such a generous woman” – and the Festival, for allowing her to “return to Cannes after thirty-five years of absence”.

In the middle of this committed but a little too wise ceremony, Zaho de Sagazan comes to set the fire. The singer, sensation of the season, crosses the Palais des Festivals in a pleated skirt and white socks to cover “Modern love” by David Bowie, a nod to the long sequence shot of “Frances Ha”, the film which made Greta famous Gerwig in 2012.

Zaho de Sagazan ended the hit on stage by rewarding the president of the jury with a knowing kiss… As if to show that “powerful women” are indeed present for this 77th Cannes Film Festival.
