Bomb aimed at conservative Poland, Another life than mine will surely land more gently in our rooms, in the wake of theEmilia Perez by Jacques Audiard. Not that films about transgender identity are legion, but we have seen a certain number of them recently.s (The Danish Girl, A fantastic woman, Girl, The Immensity, 20,000 species of bees, not forgetting the documentaries Little girl or Orlando, my political biography), whose message begins to infuse: sex and gender are distinct notions and nature can make mistakes through a misalignment that causes identity disorders and suffering for the person concerned. Presented in competition at the 2023 Venice Film Festival, the film by Malgorzata Szumowska and Michal Englert addresses the issue in a way that is both didactic and empathetic.

It is worth remembering that this Polish filmmaker couple is not new to the scene. In 12 feature films since 2000, Szumowska has worked to shake things up by tackling various societal issues head-on, with Englert first as director of photography, then co-writer and finally co-director. And this with more finesse and directorial talent than Agnieszka Holland, her Americanized elder sister, as evidenced by their all too rare films distributed in Switzerland: They (on student prostitution), In the Name of… (homosexuality in the clergy), Body (physical and mental discomfort) and Mug (the identity in question after a change of face). The only constant is that they always place themselves on the side of the individual who is the victim of prejudice.
