Historian and TV columnist Marcel Tessier has died at the age of 90.

The man from the Saint-Henri district of Montreal was known for his deep pro-independence values. He campaigned for the Rally for National Independence during the 1960s, then for the Parti Québécois.

In 2001, the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society of Montreal awarded him the title of Patriot of the Year.

The author of several historical essays became known in particular during his numerous appearances on the show Hello Hello.

The former host of the daily show, Guy Mongrain, paid tribute to him on his social networks.

“I received this unwanted call yesterday morning from the love of his life. The hours were numbered. Rest in peace my friend, the teacher, the historian, the Patriot,” the host wrote.

The Rally for a Sovereign Country also highlighted Mr. Tessier’s contribution in a press release.

“Mr. Tessier was often a popular speaker at our patriotic gatherings. Winner of the RPS Chevalier-de-Lorimier Award presented at the 2015 Patriotes Gala Dinner, Mr. Tessier was known for his passion and his strong pro-independence convictions,” wrote the organization’s president, Benoit Roy.

The latter added that Marcel Tessier “was a man who always stood tall and defended the Quebec nation at all times.”
