Who is Fabrice Pannekoucke, Laurent Wauquiez’s successor as regional president?

The suspense is over. It is the Savoyard Fabrice Pannekoucke (LR) who has just been elected this Thursday as the new president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region during an extraordinary plenary assembly. He thus succeeds Laurent Wauquiez, forced to resign after his election as deputy of Haute-Loire.

This candidate, chosen by the former president himself to take the head of the second most populated region in France (8.1 million inhabitants), benefited from a large majority made up of the LR group and its allies on the right and centre, collecting 132 votes out of 204.

But in fact, who is this Fabrice Pannekoucke, the “surprise” choice of the deputy of Haute-Loire?

Mayor at the age of 25

Vice-president of the region in charge of Agriculture since 2021, Fabrice Pannekoucke, aged 49, is a trained forester. He entered politics at a young age, becoming mayor of the small village of Saint-Jean-de-Belleville at the age of 25. In 2010, he took over the presidency of the local community of communes, Cœur de Tarentaise, then in 2014 was elected mayor of the small town of Moûtiers (3,500 inhabitants), the gateway to the Savoie ski slopes, which he still manages.
