Odd eyes do not go unnoticed and some celebrities have them. This is particularly the case of David Bowie and Kate Bosworth who have made this phenomenon almost mythical. David Bowie did not actually have true heterochromia, but a pupil that remained dilated after a shock during his youth. Other celebrities such as Jane Seymour or Benedict Cumberbatch also have this characteristic. In animals, heterochromia is more common, particularly in dog breeds such as the Siberian husky or the Australian shepherd, as well as in certain cats such as the Japanese bobtail or the Khao Manee.

A person with eyes of different colors is scientifically called heterochromic, also known as having odd-eyed eyes. The term “vair” comes from the Old French “vair”, which means “varied”. Heterochromia can affect a small part of the iris or the entire iris, resulting in fascinating combinations, such as a blue eye and a brown eye. The distribution of melanin in the iris is what determines the color of our eyes. When this distribution is uneven, it can lead to eyes of different colors. Certain pigmentation abnormalities, or even eye trauma, can also be responsible for this phenomenon.
