Auto – The brand that was the first to promise a total conversion by 2030 is the latest to backtrack. Like the others, Volvo is caught up by market realities

In the spring of 2021, the Swedish manufacturer caused a sensation by launching an absolutely unprecedented promise: that of ending the production of thermal engines (even pleading for their ban), to become an exclusively electric brand by 2030. We now know that the electric sauce is not taking off as well as hoped, and Volvo-the-pioneer has just announced that, ultimately, it will not be for 2030.

“We still believe that the future is electric, but that the transition will take longer,” they say in Gothenburg. This backpedaling by Volvo is a strong symbol.

Long live the hybrid

This means that Volvo will continue to produce combustion engines beyond 2030, while promising 90 to 100% electrified sales. Understand that the brand will bet on all forms of hybridization. The first flagship of this revised policy: the updated XC90. The model, probably one of the best global vehicles of the last 10 years, will therefore – again – probably ensure the health of Volvo which, despite its ambitions, sold “only” 26% of EVs.

We sincerely hope that this questioning of Volvo does not come too late, and that the manufacturer(…) - 20minutes
