More than 8 out of 10 French people drink coffee every day. While some appreciate its strong taste, others are especially looking for its energizing effect which helps start the day off right. However, to live longer and healthier, it is essential not to drink your coffee at any time. According to a recent study published in the European Heart Journalmorning would be the ideal time to consume this drink. This could indeed help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and increase longevity.

At what time of day should you drink coffee?

To arrive at this conclusion, researchers followed the coffee consumption habits of approximately 40,000 adults to assess the impacts on health. They found that drinking coffee in the morning was associated with a significant reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality. “So far, research suggests that coffee consumption does not increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and appears to reduce the risk of certain chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes”explains the professor Lu Qiwho led this study.

The study also revealed that 36% of participants drank their coffee in the morning, 16% consumed it at other times of the day, and 48% did not drink it. The results speak for themselves: compared to non-consumers, morning coffee lovers had 16% less risk of mortality from all causes and 31% less risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

The beneficial effects of coffee consumed in the morning are related to how our body responds to caffeine at different times. At the start of the day, our metabolism is better equipped to absorb and utilize caffeine, which helps optimize its positive effects on the cardiovascular system and metabolic regulation. “The time of day you drink coffee impacts heart health”emphasizes Dr. Lu Qi.
