When cancer strikes and social networks become a point of support

Two women from Abitibi-Témiscamingue suffering from cancer decided to share their experiences on social networks. The treatment plans vary, the cases are different and they give news about their state of health on a platform where solidarity and empathy through moments of very strong emotions bring a certain comfort.

The photographer in Val-d’Or, Geneviève Lagrois, underwent an operation last September for rectal cancer.

After receiving the recovery results from her oncologist, she decided to share the good news with her friends on the Internet to give news to everyone at the same time, share and perhaps break taboos.

His publication sparked hundreds of comments and reactions. I didn’t expect so many comments and shares, it’s a nice feedback, it’s a little surprising and encouragingshe added.

Author and actress Véronique Filion d’Amos was diagnosed with breast cancer last spring and is beginning treatments.

She says that at first, it was very difficult and emotionally draining to tell loved ones about her illness. I was like, ‘My God, I’ll never be able to tell everyone.’ It exhausted me, people cry, you deal with other people’s emotions. I found it very difficultshe explained, ensuring that at the beginning, sharing news about her health on social networks was limited to her family and loved ones, but that she decided to inform a wider audience since many were asking his news.

« We must not forget that when we do chemo we are immunosuppressed, we are confined to the house and then we do not see anyone. So social networks are a door for them to give to you and it’s a door for you to receive messages when things are going well, when things are not going well. »

Learn from others

Geneviève Lagrois says she found groups on social networks interested in cancer, which allowed her to learn more about the experiences of people who suffer from it.

I have a lot of people who have written to me to say: “I had this too or my boyfriend had this too”. We really had a great time sharing this. Without having done it, without having published on social networks, I surely would not have had these beautiful shares.she explained.
