Strike at Canada Post: mediation temporarily suspended

The special mediator appointed by federal Labor Minister Steven MacKinnon has temporarily suspended mediation between Canada Post and the Postal Workers Union (CUPW).

The minister explains in a publication on X that the two parties are “too far apart on crucial issues for mediation to be fruitful at present”.

“This pause in mediation activities will, I hope, allow the parties to re-evaluate their positions and return to the negotiating table with renewed determination,” says Mr. MacKinnon.

The employer and the union were also summoned to the minister’s office on Wednesday.

“As soon as productive negotiations can resume, the special mediator will communicate with the parties,” adds the minister.

The national strike by Canada Post employees is in its 13th day.
