red fruit and menthol flavors would be dangerous for health

A new study reignites the debate on the dangers of electronic cigarettes. While these are often presented as an alternative to tobacco, certain flavors, such as red fruits and menthol, could aggravate health risks. Published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences the study thus highlights the harmful effects of these aromas on the lungs, reports Europe 1 this Friday, November 8, 2024.

The decline in immune defenses

By exposing mice to these flavored vapors, researchers found that macrophages, immune cells essential for eliminating harmful particles in the bronchi, lost their effectiveness. These dysfunctions weaken natural defenses and increase the risk of respiratory infections, as detailed by Professor Daniel Thomas, cardiologist and vice-president of the Alliance Against Tobacco.

Menthol is not left out. A previous study had already established that this aroma caused similar effects on the pulmonary immune system.

Results to be qualified

“We have to be careful about the types of flavors we include in these products”explains Ajitha Thanabalasuriar, a researcher at McGill University quoted by Actu.fr . The latter also pointed out the marketing around these aromas which mainly targets young people.

However, specialists call for qualifying the conclusions of this study. “Vaping is much less dangerous than remaining a smoker”estimates Professor Daniel Thomas, who recommends that vapers not give in to panic or return to tobacco. The best thing is obviously not to smoke at all, he insisted.
