Colorectal cancer: a major advance for screening in Guyana!

Since October 2021, thanks to the support of the Medical and Prevention Services of the Regional Health Agency (ARS) of Guyana and the General Social Security Fund (CGSS) of Guyanathe Regional Cancer Screening Coordination Center (CRCDC) of Guyana was heard by the Directorate General of Health (DGS). The result is a significant step forward: the designation of a local laboratory in Guyana for the reading of colorectal tests for organized colorectal cancer screening (DOCCR).

This development represents a decisive step for public health in Guyana. From now on, Guyanese patients will benefit from faster and more reliable results, saving them from having to repeat the tests multiple times. Until now, a large number of tests were deemed uninterpretable, generating frustration and delays in diagnoses. This new system will make it possible to correct this situation and strengthen the effectiveness of screening.

We would like to express our gratitude to all the actors who contributed to this success, in particular the scientific committee of the CRCDC Guyana, the Specific Regional Cancer System ONCOGUYANE, the URPS des Médecins as well as the other members of the board of directors of the CRCDC Guyana. Their expertise and commitment were essential to defend this issue and improve organized screening for colorectal cancer in our region.

This progress demonstrates the importance of collaboration between health institutions to provide quality care to the Guyanese population. The CRCDC Guyana reaffirms its commitment to promoting prevention and offering effective screening services to protect the health of all.

Please note: the delivery of samples was made possible on the coast and in isolated communities thanks to the partnership established with La Poste.
