A pilot lung cancer screening program will be launched by the end of 2025, the National Cancer Institute announced on Thursday, January 23. If widespread, it could enable a reduction in mortality of almost 25%. Do you think this type of screening should be generalized?

The absence of a widespread and organized lung cancer screening campaign in is pushing the National Cancer Institute (Inca) to act. According to France Bleu, the medical institution announced on Thursday January 23 that it would put in place a pilot generalized screening program called “Impulsion” by the end of the year. 20,000 patients will participate before, perhaps, extending this prevention system to the entire population.

Lung cancer, particularly caused by tobacco, is one of the deadliest. It is often diagnosed late, which limits the chances of survival. Early detection of this pathology could, according to oncologists, reduce mortality by nearly 25%. In your opinion, should we invest more in prevention and screening to save lives?

Regular exams

Study participants, people aged 50 to 74, smokers and ex-smokers who have quit for less than 15 years with a cumulative tobacco consumption of at least 20 packs per year, will be invited to have regular examinations.

In particular, perform two low-dose chest scans one year apart in order to detect possible abnormalities. They will also be offered smoking cessation. Would you be willing to participate in this type of program if you belonged to an at-risk population?

In France, three cancers (breast, colorectal, cervical) are the subject of organized screening, offered systematically to a targeted population. For lung cancer, the main obstacle for health authorities has long been a risk of “overdiagnosis” of tumors which ultimately do not develop into cancer. Do you think that lung cancer screening should be systematically offered despite the risk of overdiagnosis?
