Belgium wakes up without a coach. Who will Vincent Mannaert choose to take charge of the Devils?
Georges Leekens has been coach of the Red Devils twice in the past. The dismissal of Domenico Tedesco did not surprise him, but caused him pain.
Leekens confirms that finding a successor will not be an easy task: “They will first have to decide on the profile they want for the next coach. Everyone thinks about winning, but it’s not that simple,” said Leekens. he declared in Gazet van Oost-Vlaanderen.
Leekens suggests a Belgian name: “Hein Vanhaezebrouck is free and has many skills. Over the years, he may have offended some, but sometimes you have to forgive and forget. The main thing is to know whether or not it corresponds to the federation’s expectations.”
-Should we find a Belgian coach?
If Belgium were to appoint a third foreign coach in a row, Leekens is thinking of Mark van Bommelbut he fears it will be difficult. “It’s not always easy to make a football team completely embrace another culture. The team needs the right structure and the right man to get us back on track.”
And Leekens himself? He does not want to close the door to the impossible: “If Vincent Mannaert needs me, he can call me. My number has been the same for 30 years. I like to help Belgian football with all my heart. I am a Proud Belgian and I want to see our football return to a high level.” During his second and final stint with the national team, Georges Leekens rubbed shoulders with young Thibaut Courtois, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku. But it will take more to come back.
