2025-2026 flu campaign: pre-orders for trivalent vaccines are being organized

For the next flu vaccination season, we will use trivalent vaccines, rather than quadrivalent ones. However, as all trivalent vaccines have not yet obtained marketing authorization, pharmacists will have to pre-order quadrivalent vaccines… but will receive their trivalent version.

The 2025-2026 seasonal flu vaccination campaign is already being organized and the pharmaceutical laboratories concerned (Sanofi, Seqirus and Viatris) will put in place pre-orders for flu vaccines until March 31. However, this next vaccination season will have a particularity: it will no longer be done with quadrivalent vaccines, but with trivalent vaccines. Indeed, the General Directorate of Health (DGS) specifies that“currently, the flu vaccines reimbursed by health insurance in are quadrivalent and contain the four main flu strains responsible for seasonal flu: A (H1N1), A (H3N2), B/Victoria and B/Yamagata. However, the B/Yamagata strain of the influenza B virus has no longer circulated since March 2020, in particular due to public health measures put in place to limit the spread of Covid-19 during the pandemic.. Based on these data, the European Medicines Agency has recommended switching from quadrivalent vaccines to trivalent vaccines that do not include the B/Yamagata strain, no later than the 2025-2026 season.

In this context, the French health authorities are organizing the arrival on the market and treatment of trivalent vaccines for the 2025-2026 season. However, “as all authorizations have not yet been issued, pharmaceutical laboratories will offer a pre-order on the basis of the quadrivalent vaccine already reimbursed by health insurance. And the final order will be made on the basis of the trivalent vaccine when the authorizations have been issued”specifies the DGS.

The body invites pharmacists and all structures concerned by this vaccination to pre-order vaccine doses in sufficient quantities to cover the needs they consider necessary and continue to improve the vaccination coverage rates of the populations targeted by the recommendations.
