The explosion of cases of human metapneumovirus in China: everything you need to know about this virus which causes a situation similar to an epidemic.
Tl;dr
- China is facing a surge in respiratory diseases.
- Indiscriminate use of antivirals against human metapneumovirus is not recommended.
- Simple preventative measures can help prevent the spread.
Respiratory disease outbreak in China
China is currently experiencing a worrying increase in the number of cases of respiratory diseases. According to a report published by Reutersinfections with pathogens such as rhinovirus and human metapneumovirus are on the rise, particularly among people under 14 years of age in the northern provinces.
Human metapneumovirus: a silent scourge
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus of the Paramyxoviridae family, is one of the main causes of these infections. First identified in 2001, it is one of the most common causes of respiratory infections, particularly in young children, the elderly and immunocompromised individuals. The symptoms of HMPV, which include cough, congestion and fever, are similar to those of the common cold. However, in people with weakened immune systems, HMPV can trigger more serious conditions such as bronchitis and pneumonia.
Caution in the use of antivirals
And respiratory disease expert from a Shanghai hospital, in a recent interview with National Business Daily, warned the public against the indiscriminate use of antiviral drugs to combat HMPV. Indeed, indiscriminate use of these medications could lead to other health complications and even drug resistance.

Prevention, the best weapon against HMPV
To date, no specific vaccine or antiviral treatment exists for HMPV. Simple preventative measures, such as:
- cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing,
- wash your hands frequently and properly (with soap and water for at least 20 seconds),
- avoid sharing cups and kitchen utensils with other people,
- refrain from giving kisses,
- stay home when sick,
can help prevent the spread of this virus.
