From January 1, 2025, a new compulsory vaccination awaits infants in . This measure aims to better protect toddlers against serious illnesses. We tell you everything.

From January 1, 2025, a new major step in the fight against serious infections will come into force: vaccination against meningococci will become compulsory for all infants in France. This decision, announced by the Directorate General of Health, follows an alarming increase in these infections in 2022 and 2023. Meningococci, bacteria responsible for serious illnesses such as meningitis and septicaemia, have caused havoc in recent years. Santé Publique France reminds that these infections can be “very serious like meningitiswhich can be fatal or leave significant after-effects” (actu.fr).

The tragic case of a 7-year-old girl, who died of meningitis in , left its mark and highlighted the urgency of strengthening prevention. Although these infections remain rare, they are no less formidable. Their rapid progression and their lethal potential (in 10% of cases) make them a public health priority, particularly for infants, young children and adolescents, who are the most vulnerable.

Vaccination adapted to the most virulent strains

Serogroups A, B, C, W and Y are responsible for the majority of meningococcal infections. However, over the past two years, a notable increase in infections due to serogroups W and Y, characterized by increased virulence and a higher mortality rate, has been observed. To respond to this threat, compulsory vaccination will now include meningococci ACWY and B. Vaccination against meningococcus C, already in place, will be replaced by that against meningococcus ACWY.

The Ministry of Health recalls the importance of reacting quickly in the event of invasive meningococcal infection. Two symptoms principals must alert parents: a poorly tolerated high fever and/or the rapid appearance of red or purplish spots on the body (purpura). Faced with these signs, it is imperative to consult a doctor or contact 15 urgently.

Conditions of compulsory vaccination

The vaccination schedule has been designed to adapt to the needs of infants:

  • Meningococci ACWY: a first dose will be administered at 6 months, followed by a second injection at 12 months. A transition is planned for children who have already received a first dose of the meningococcal C vaccine before 2025.
  • Meningococcus B: three injections are planned, at 3 months, 5 months and 12 months. These vaccines can be administered by different professionals: doctors, pediatricians, midwives and nurses.

This new obligation is part of a public health strategy aimed at protecting young people against infections that are both rare and potentially fatal. Raising awareness among parents and healthcare professionals will be crucial to ensure an effective transition to this new vaccination schedule. The safety and health of infants are at stake, faced with a bacterial threat that can be prevented.
