Protect yourself and your loved ones from respiratory viruses

As the end-of-year holidays approach, the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MSSS) recalls the importance of taking basic hygiene measures to limit the spread of respiratory viruses, such as the respiratory virus syncytial (RSV), seasonal flu (influenza) and COVID-19.

These viruses are on the rise and, in the context of numerous festive gatherings, it is essential to adopt responsible behavior to protect one’s health and that of others, particularly vulnerable people.

Good practices to adopt to prevent the transmission of viruses

To limit the circulation of viruses during holiday celebrations and avoid inconveniences, it is recommended to follow these preventive behaviors:

• Stay home if you have symptoms such as fever.

• Wear a mask until symptoms disappear completely, especially in the presence of other people.

• Avoid contact with vulnerable people and inform people you plan to meet of your state of health.

• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and throw it away immediately afterward.

• If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow.

• Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer if soap is not available.

Vaccination: an effective way to protect yourself

Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to prevent serious complications related to respiratory viruses. It is still possible to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and the flu, vaccines being free for the entire population. Appointments are available in all regions of Quebec via Clic Santé.

Choosing the right health service when needed

In a context of high demand, it is essential to use health services appropriately to avoid overloading emergency departments. Here are some recommendations on the preferred remedies:

• Your pharmacy is an excellent point of contact for advice and treatment for minor health problems.

• Medical clinics and family medicine groups (GMF) are preferred for non-urgent health problems.

• 811 allows you to obtain medical or psychosocial advice at home. Before going to the hospital, it is advisable to contact Info-Santé or Info-Social for an initial assessment.

• Emergencies should be reserved for serious situations, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, or serious injuries.
