In order to improve access to care for these patients, the ANSM extends from January 6, 2025 the initial annual prescription of topiramate to competent “pain” doctors (i.e. a health professional holding a diploma of additional specialized studies, specific transversal training or validation of acquired experience).
Furthermore, as of January 6, 2025, the care agreement form is replaced by a shared information certificate. However, patients currently undergoing treatment will be able to use their current care agreement form until the end of its year of validity.
Information for dispensing by pharmacists:
As of January 6, 2025, the initial annual prescription of topiramate for the prophylaxis of migraine in women of childbearing age on highly effective contraception can be carried out by neurologists and also by competent “pain” doctors. Its renewal within one year is not restricted to a specialty.
When dispensing topiramate:
- In addition to the initial annual prescription from a neurologist, a pediatrician or a competent “pain” doctor, and where applicable, that of renewal by any doctor, the patient must now present to you the certificate of shared information dating back less than a year that she co-signed with her neurologist, pediatrician or, from January 6, 2025, her competent “pain” doctor. This certificate replaces the care agreement form. However, the care agreement forms remain valid until the end of their validity.
- At the time of dispensing, inform your patient of the risks to the unborn child in the event of exposure during pregnancy. To do this, give them the patient card contained in the medication box and check that their prescribing doctor has given them the patient information brochure.
