The Linky smart meter, deployed since 2015, continues to fuel debate and mistrust. A new trend circulating on social networks, particularly on TikTok, recommends surrounding them with aluminum foil to block their electromagnetic waves.
In short:
- A new trend on social networks advises wrapping the Linky meter in aluminum foil.
- This trick relies on unfounded beliefs and raises security questions.
- Studies show that the waves emitted by the Linky meter are well below the regulatory thresholds.
Since its deployment, the Linky smart meter has raised fears among certain consumers, in particular because of the electromagnetic waves it emits. Although the device only transmits data once a day, between midnight and 6 a.m., viral videos claim that surrounding the case with aluminum foil would block these supposedly harmful emissions. These videos, which have tens of thousands of views, are based on concerns related to electrosensitivity: headaches, dizziness or discomfort would be caused by the waves emitted by the meter. However, these assertions are based more on beliefs than on proven scientific facts.
The Linky smart meter emits waves well below the regulatory thresholds
According to an in-depth study carried out by the National Frequency Agency (ANFR) in 2017, the waves emitted by the Linky meter are well below the regulatory limit values. Concretely, the readings carried out show radiation levels 25 to 37 times lower than the accepted thresholds for electromagnetic fields. Furthermore, these maximum values are only observed during data transfer, which lasts only a few minutes per day and only at a short distance (between 20 and 40 cm from the meter).
These figures demonstrate that the Linky meter does not emit waves continuously and at dangerous levels, unlike certain common devices such as Wi-Fi boxes or mobile phones. Beyond its uselessness, wrapping a Linky meter in aluminum foil presents real risks. Enedis reminds that this action can prevent the natural ventilation of the meter, causing overheating which could lead to a power cut for safety reasons, or even in the worst case, a fire. Furthermore, aluminum foil, being a conductor of electricity, increases the risk of electrocution if electrical wires come into contact with this metal barrier.
Be careful about “tips” regarding the Linky smart meter
This trend highlights a broader problem: the rapid spread of unfounded tips on social networks. Although some may seem harmless, they can be misleading and dangerous. It is therefore essential to verify the information, especially when it comes to home security. Wrapping a Linky meter in aluminum foil is not only ineffective, but also poses a danger to your safety. Scientific studies have demonstrated that the waves emitted by this device are harmless to health. Rather than following dubious advice on social media, it is better to get information from reliable sources to avoid taking unnecessary risks.
