“I don’t even dare look at the number of hours I spend on screens and on social networks!” Marie created Mama Etcetera on Instagram in September 2023. She shares ideas for weekend outings in Alsace with children on this social network. To prepare her publications, she must first do research on the internet. She also spends a lot of time interacting with her subscribers, there are almost 8,000 of them. “I want to be as close as possible to the people who follow me, whether in private messages or comments.”
To achieve this, it is impossible to respect the rules of digital well-being. “I can spend hours on screens from 9 p.m. until midnight, and work in the morning when I get up. It’s not very good, but I’m already on the networks to watch the messages that I could have received during the night.”
“I can’t see myself giving them a cell phone at 12 years old, it scares me a little.”
With children, it’s also complicated. At 4 and 6 years old, they don’t have a phone. But they have a mother who spends a lot of time looking at a screen. “They know social networks. They understand that it’s mom’s job, but it’s still a little too much since it can come at meal time or something else.”
And when they grow up, the question will be asked differently. “I can’t see myself giving them a cell phone at 12 years old”sighs Marie who explains that she wants to protect her children. “It scares me a little bit. It’s ultimately a questioning of telling myself ok, I’m talking to them about social networks, I’m talking to them about the phone while not wanting to show them and telling them no, no, it There’s no phone there right now.” Marie admits, she doesn’t know what the solution is. “For now, it’s a mystery.”
