Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was released from hospital on Sunday after undergoing surgery for a brain hemorrhage.
The 79-year-old politician spoke alongside doctors at a press conference on Sunday morning, showing that he was doing well.
“I am here alive, in good health, with the desire to work. And I’ll tell you something that I used to say during the campaign: I’m 79 years old, I have the energy of 30 years and the enthusiasm of 20 years to build this country,” he said. he declared.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s medical team says the operation went well and he will be able to walk and hold meetings as he rests at his home in the city of São Paulo , until Thursday.
The president’s doctors said international travel was ruled out until further notice, but he could travel to Brasilia, the country’s capital, if everything went well during the medical examination.
The president also made his first comments on Saturday’s arrest of General Walter Braga Netto, a former member of President Jair Bolsonaro’s government and his 2022 running mate, as part of an investigation into an alleged coup. He has largely avoided commenting on the matter due to ongoing investigations.
“It is not possible for us to accept disrespect for democracy and disrespect for the constitution. And it is not possible for us to accept that, in a generous country like Brazil, high-ranking soldiers are plotting against a president, his vice-president and a president of the supreme electoral court,” declared Mr. Lula .
Mr. Braga Netto was charged in November, along with Mr. Bolsonaro and 35 others, with plotting a coup aimed at keeping Mr. Bolsonaro in power after his failed re-election bid in 2022.
Prosecutors have not yet filed formal charges against Walter Braga Netto. His arrest is linked to allegations of obstructing the collection of evidence, federal police said in a statement.
