According to a study carried out by Ifop, nearlyone in two French people suffer from digestive disorders. These ailments, although not life-threatening, can significantly impair quality of life by causing abdominal pain, bloating, heartburn, and other uncomfortable symptoms. Guests of “It’s Going Much Better”, gastroenterologists Jean-Jacques Raynaud and Elise Pommaret answer all our questions.

Irritable bowel syndrome “is a functional disease, that is to say there is no visible lesion, but the functioning of the intestine is disrupted,” explains Dr. Raynaud. To relieve these symptoms, it is essential toadopt a suitable diet. Doctor Pommaret recommends to identify trigger foods and avoid them. “Fiber can be beneficial, but it should be introduced gradually to avoid worsening symptoms,” she adds.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is another common condition that can impair quality of life. It is characterized by acid reflux into the esophagus, causing burning and chest pain. Doctor Raynaud emphasizes that GERD may be linked to a hiatal hernia. “Hernia is not a problem in itself, except in rare cases where it requires surgery,” he says. To alleviate the symptoms of GERD, it is recommended avoid large meals and do not lie down immediately after eating. “It is better to lie on your left side to reduce reflux“, advises the gastroenterologist.

Is there a treatment?

In addition to dietary changes, drug treatments may be prescribed for these digestive disorders. Proton pump inhibitors are often used to reduce stomach acid in the case of GERD. However, Doctor Raynaud warns against prolonged use without medical advice. “It is important to consult a health professional for appropriate follow-up,” he insists.

Furthermore, stress management in the treatment of digestive disorders is just as important. Stress can exacerbate symptoms of IBS and GERD. “Relaxation techniques, such as meditation or yoga, can be beneficial,” concludes Doctor Pommaret.
