an unknown disease kills dozens, authorities on alert

A mysterious disease is raging in the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo, causing dozens of deaths since the end of October. With symptoms similar to those of the flu, it has so far mainly affected women and children.

An epidemic of unknown origin is causing panic in the Kwango province, in the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Since the end of October, this mysterious disease has caused dozens of deaths. Figures vary depending on sources: between 67 and 143 deaths were reported by local authorities as of December 2, while the Ministry of Health confirmed, at least, 79 deaths as of December 4.

The disease, which has spread rapidly, presents symptoms similar to those of the flu: fever, headache, cough, runny nose, breathing difficulties and anemia. It particularly affected women and children. In the absence of treatment, many patients die at home, according to the vice-governor of the province, Remy Saki, and the provincial minister of Health, Apollinaire Yumba.

Barrier gestures and restrictions

Nearly 400 cases have already been identified, but researchers have not yet managed to identify the disease or its origin. A team of epidemiological experts is expected on site to take samples and try to find answers.

While awaiting the conclusions of the investigations, the Ministry of Health has recommended measures inspired by the fight against Covid-19: limitation of gatherings, frequent hand washing and reporting of suspected cases. Local authorities have also considered restricting the movement of people in neighboring villages to stem the spread.

This new crisis comes as the DRC is currently battling an epidemic of mpox (monkey pox). Since January, the country has recorded more than 39,000 cases and more than 1,000 deaths, according to the Africa CDC, the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

With this emerging disease and the mpox epidemic, the DRC faces a large-scale health challenge, in a context where medical and logistical resources remain precarious.
