23 men and 2 women were infected with HIV during the year, i.e. “ double the number of new cases reported » in 2023, worries the Health Department.

If she explains these figures by “ the fact that a good number of private doctors (…) themselves participated in the screening of their patients “, they nevertheless demonstrate that ” HIV is very present in Polynesia and it affects more people than we think ».

« Among the new cases detected, a large proportion concern primary infections, therefore recently infected people, with a greater prevalence among 30-40 year olds. “, underlines the Health Department which deplores “ that a significant part of the population does not feel directly concerned (…), which accentuates the risk of spread » you virus.

And this while no cure exists, even if medical advances in recent years have made it possible to extend the life expectancy of patients.

The Health Department also points to “ risky behaviors among young people “, often ” under the influence of alcohol or psychoactive substances ».

« These practices, linked to a lack of awareness of the danger, risk compromising their future even before they reach the age of majority. “, she warns.

The Health Department adds that it will launch “an annual campaign to fight HIV and its spread throughout the country” and recalls that this Sunday is World AIDS Day.
