November 14 is World Diabetes Day and it is an opportunity for health stakeholders to highlight certain actions. This year, the Diabète 01 association will be present at the Bourg-en-Bresse hospital center. It will allow all people who go there to be made aware of this disease, but also to benefit from free on-site screening. The theme chosen this year is: “Diabetes for women, diabetes for men”. This information for the general public is important: each year, patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes increase by approximately 4%. What is the difference between the two?
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, diagnosed early and requiring several blood sugar monitorings per day and daily insulin injections. Type 2 diabetes does not affect children but older patients, adults, who are often overweight.
Two therapeutic education programs
In Ain, people affected by diabetes, whether children or adults, are fortunate to be able to benefit from the services of Utep, Territorial Patient Education Unit.
Each year, 300 adults and children are cared for by the professionals of this multidisciplinary team: psychologist, nurse, dietician, secretary and pharmacist.
Two therapeutic education programs are developed there: one for adults and the other, created last year, for children.
