On the occasion of its twentieth anniversary, the Thorax Institute (Nantes University, Inserm, CNRS, Nantes University Hospital) is offering, Wednesday November 13, a third “open-heart conference”, dedicated to the general public. This time it will be about cardiovascular diseases linked to cholesterol.
Cholesterol (partly coming from food and mainly produced by the liver) is an essential molecule for our body. It plays a crucial role in hormone synthesis and cell structure.
Excess cholesterol, particularly in its LDL form (commonly called “bad cholesterol”), can have serious consequences on cardiovascular health. Indeed, the accumulation of LDL cholesterol in the arterial walls leads to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques. This process, exacerbated by risk factors such as smoking, obesity or diabetes, is responsible for the occurrence of severe cardiovascular diseases, such as myocardial infarction or stroke.
An endocrinologist and a genetics researcher host the conference
In France, cardiovascular diseases represent the leading cause of death among women and cause around 400 deaths daily.
Sarra Smati-Grangeon, endocrinologist, and Antoine Rimbert, genetics researcher, will recall the roles of cholesterol and will also present the latest advances in their research carried out thanks to the participation of patients from the clinical investigation center of the thorax institute.
Wednesday November 13, 2024from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the faculty of odontology of Nantes-Université, Ricordeau amphitheater, 1, place Alexis-Ricordeau, Nantes. Free, register on the institutduthorax.org website.
