After its first in 2023, BigUp Santé, the territorial professional health community (CPTS) of Gâtine, is renewing its screening campaign on the occasion of World Diabetes Day, Thursday November 14, 2024.

In Gâtine more than elsewhere, raising awareness of the first chronic disease in is a crucial issue. Concrete proof, last year, for a first operation of its kind in the Hyper U shopping mall in Parthenay, of the 379 people screened, eleven had a diabetes rate above the norms.

“The care pathway is not ideal in the region”

“In Gâtine, 6.2% of the population, or 3,400 people, are declared diabetic, compared to 5.9% in Deux-Sèvres, 5.4% in Nouvelle-Aquitaine and in France. Prevention is essential. When we think that we have just finished a month of breast cancer prevention and that there are still one in two French women who do not have a mammogram…”says Francine Rivière, physiotherapist in Parthenay and prevention referent at BigUp Santé.

Why is Gâtine more than elsewhere a land of diabetics? “Because there is perhaps less follow-up… The care pathway is not ideal in the region, hence the importance of this type of screening”responds Francine Rivière spontaneously, detailing the risk factors, such as being overweight, lack of physical activity or genetic predispositions.

“The two dominant factors are obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. We know that this chronic disease is booming in France, where there has been an increase from two million to four million declared diabetics over the last twenty years.supports Gérard Pouzin, president of the Association of Diabetics of Deux-Sèvres (AFD 79), 130 members.

Around fifteen people mobilized

Food or more precarious social situations and therefore more exposed are added to the risk factors. Hence the need to address other audiences. This time, adult volunteers for this free detection will meet in the shopping arcade of the Leclerc hypermarket in Parthenay all day on November 14.

Provide a response

On the bridge, around BigUp, eleven health professionals – two doctors, eight nurses and a pharmacist – will take turns, while five volunteers from AFD 79 will meet users of the shopping mall to inform them and encourage them to get tested. This campaign received financial support from the Parthenay Lions Club and, for the poster communication campaign, the voluntary help of the Sapatiques, these pillars of health sport in the Sap oval land gathered around Philippe Proust who now welcome twenty-one patients with long-term illness.

“Every time we take a prevention course, we must provide a response”argues Francine Rivière. In fact, explains Jennifer Bonnanfant, coordinator of the CPTS of Gâtine, “if, during screening, we find a blood sugar level higher than the norm (Editor’s note: more than 2 g per liter of blood), The patient is invited to contact his doctor for a second necessary check-up. And, if the person does not have a treating doctor, we have slots available with BigUp practitioners. Finally, if the rate proves to be significantly higher and presents a danger, this may lead to immediate transport to the diabetology department of the hospital.”

Free diabetes screening day Thursday November 14, 2024 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Leclerc shopping mall, Loges zone in Parthenay.
