As part of the Pink October campaign, the AAPPMA, the Trout du Haut-Verdon fishing association, in coordination with the 04 fishing network and the League against Cancer, organized a screening awareness day on the Saint-André-les-Alpes market. From the morning, the participants discovered an original initiative taking the drama out of prevention and making the examination more relaxed. Indeed, volunteers from the League Against Cancer association offered the ladies present the opportunity to familiarize themselves with self-palpation of the breasts using silicone busts.

This educational method made it possible to remove taboos while having fun, and to explain the simple actions to adopt regularly to spot the slightest anomaly. Note that the members of Roudoulet de Chamatte, headed by president Anne-Marie Honnorat, actively participated in this useful and festive day. The volunteers organized a short walk, the sale of boxes of pralines and various objects, note that Niky, producer of Belgian waffles at the U Express store, helped to boost sales.

Several Saint-André merchants played the game by adorning their windows with decorations made with pink bags. The ladies volunteers were also able to learn the technique of Tenkara, (falling from the sky, like an insect resting on the water), a Japanese fly fishing method particularly appreciated for its simplicity and respect for the environment ( it consists of using only a rod, a line and a carefully made fly).

At the initiative of the Departmental Fishing Federation and the local AAPPMA, and with the active participation of Guillaume Durand, the Verdon fishing guide, an introduction to this practice on the Verdon won over interested women and young girls. “We are very satisfied with this day“, said the AAPPMA representative. “By associating fishing, a passion shared by many residents, with a cause as important as the fight against breast cancer, we hope to have raised awareness among a wide audience of the importance of early detection.

This unique initiative demonstrates a desire to raise women’s awareness of the importance of monitoring their health and regularly consulting their gynecologist or GP. By offering a non-medical, friendly and fun setting, the organizers were able to reach a wide audience and get the message across. This day was an opportunity to remind people that prevention is the best way to fight breast cancer (and other cancers).

The various partners of this operation “hope to repeat the experience next year and extend this initiative to other municipalities“.
