The circulation of the whooping cough is “increasing sharply in New Aquitaine”. The Regional Health Agency (ARS) wanted to call for vigilance, this Thursday, June 30, 2023, in the face of the resurgence of cases including in vaccinated people.

In 2024, since January, 51 clusters have been reported to the ARS Regional Focal Point in the region. Last year, no clusters were declared.

What should I do if I have whooping cough?

Whooping cough is a bacterial infection that causes frequent and prolonged coughing fits. Very contagious, it is transmitted precisely by coughing. The ARS recommends consulting a doctor in the event of a cough that persists for more than seven days. A PCR test will confirm the diagnosis and antibiotics will then be prescribed.

As with Covid, “the confirmed cases should not attend a community” during the first three to five days of treatment (depending on the antibiotic used). If you are a contact case and symptomatic, “u“biological confirmation must be requested.”

Severe forms

The ARS specifies that serious forms “can be developed in unvaccinated people (newborns, pregnant women, immunocompromised people, etc.)”. There vaccination is obligatory in infants, with the first injections starting at the age of two months.
