Polio in South Kivu: 1,800,000 children expected in the 3rd phase of vaccination

One million eight hundred thousand children under the age of 5 are expected from October 10 to 12 for the 3rd phase of polio vaccination in South Kivu.

The Provincial Health Division said this on Monday October 7 during a preparatory meeting in Bukavu.

At the initiative of the provincial government, the Expanded Vaccination Program (EPI) intends to carry out this campaign in the 34 health zones of South Kivu.

The strategy used by vaccinators remains door-to-door, indicated Dr Claude Bahizire, communications officer at the South Kivu DPS.

According to this doctor, vaccinators will go from household to household, to try to vaccinate all the children in this part of the country for three days.

Dr Claude Bahizire therefore recommended that parents rally together to vaccinate all these children:

« We have always announced that polio remains a public health problem because even last year our province had cases of polio where children became crippled. The only way to help these children avoid polio is vaccination because there are no medications for polio; if a child has polio, it’s over: he remains crippled all his life With two drops given to this child, it can help him ».
