While Pink October has just started, for around ten days, the hospital center has put into service a brand new mammograph. Less irradiating, more sensitive to compression, it will allow breast cancer to be detected at an earlier stage.

It is a latest generation machine made available to patients at the Aurillac hospital center: a brand new mammograph. “The new thing is that it slows down at the end of the compression so it’s less painful for patients”according to Doctor Julie Bizouerne, radiologist.

The novelty lies above all in the quality of the photos: sharper, more detailed images which facilitate screening work. “In the last 20 years, there has been a significant improvement in the quality of mammography images, with necessarily screening that is more efficient and that makes it possible to find smaller things, which heal better with less invasive treatments for patients” adds Doctor Bizouerne. In France, breast cancer represents 1/3 of cancer cases in women.

Absence of obvious symptoms, fear of having pain or fear of the diagnosis, too many women still escape screening campaigns. Michèle Lablanquie, president of the Cantal Cancer League, explains: “Statistically, only one in two women are screened. In our region, in our department, there is also the remoteness, the medical deserts which mean that we have to find a car or be transported. The remoteness of certain health centers is also a handicap.. Seven out of 1,000 women discover their cancer during screening, an early detection that allows 99 out of 100 women to be alive five years after diagnosis.

Sunday October 13, for the 11th edition, “Aurillac pour Elles” will bring together women around a free-pace running event. The goal is to raise awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer.
