An outbreak of vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE) is underway at the medicine-surgical unit of Rouyn-Noranda Hospital.

The Abitibi-Témiscamingue Integrated Health and Social Services Center (CISSS-AT) has implemented measures to prevent the spread of this bacteria.

Antibiotic-resistant enterococci can cause urinary tract infections, wound infections, and blood infections.

What is an ERV

“Enterococci are bacteria that are usually found in the intestines and stools of people. VRE are enterococci that have developed resistance to several antibiotics, including vancomycin,” according to the CISSS de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue.

The CISSS therefore asks visitors to wash their hands thoroughly and wear personal protective equipment, such as masks and protective gowns.

Posters may have been posted on the doors of some rooms. Visitors should then consult the nurses to find out the specific measures to take.

Finally, the CISSS indicates in a press release thatIt is important not to use the user toilets. These can be contaminated with various microorganisms, including VRE.

This bacteria is transmitted from carriers to other people. It does not usually cause infection in healthy people.
