A prestigious competition
The “French Capital of Biodiversity” competition, created in 2010, is open to all French municipalities and intercommunalities. Organized by the OFB and other partners, it is supported by the Ministry of Ecological Transition and highlights exemplary initiatives in favor of biodiversity, essential at a time when it is in decline and threatened.
Nantes initiatives rewarded
Among the 50 applications this year, Nantes stood out for several innovative actions, notably:
– The nourishing landscapes operation, which encourages the cultivation of edible plants in the city
– The distribution of seeds to encourage residents to flower their streets
– Nature education work in schools
– Greening schoolyards
– The artistic installations of Voyage à Nantes, in collaboration with the city’s gardeners.
A notable victory
This distinction promotes the work of municipal agents and green initiatives led by the city. Although criticism of the “minerality” of Nantes is still present, this award demonstrates that the city is an example of environmentally friendly urban management.
If Nantes won this prize in its category, it is the community of communes of Bruyères Vallons des Vosges, located in the Vosges, which was crowned French Capital of Biodiversity 2024.
