Maintaining good health is an everyday job. Researchers, whose comments were relayed by the Daily Mail, looked into the subject and believe they have discovered exactly how much time each day we should spend sitting, sleeping, standing or exercising to have and maintain a healthy heart.

They first felt that it was vital to be up for at least five hours a day because being stationary for too much of the day would increase the risk of many health problems, including weight gain, diabetes type 2, cancer and even premature death.

According to their research results, we should also sit for only six hours a day, do vigorous exercise for a little more than two hours a day, and light exercise (housework, cooking dinner, etc.) for another two. As for sleep, eight hours and twenty minutes are essential.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers analyzed data from more than 2,300 volunteers, with an average age of 60 years. A quarter had type 2 diabetes. They tracked their activity for eight days using a small monitor worn on their thighs, calculating the total time each spent sitting, standing and sleeping. The team then compared health markers among participants, including waist circumference and glucose and insulin levels.

“Sedentary behavior is negatively associated with cardiometabolic health. Moving as much as possible is still encouraged as life forces us to sit in front of screens. Shorter sitting time and more time spent standing, doing exercise “physical activity and sleep significantly improve our cardiometabolic health”explained Dr. Christian Brakenridge, the author of the study, while recalling that this phenomenon was linked to an improvement in blood sugar, insulin sensitivity, insulin levels, fat percentage, as well as triacylglycerol and cholesterol levels.
