Geneva hosts from Tuesday to Thursday the 34th Alzheimer Europe Conference, which brings together specialists and people affected by this disease. They will discuss recent discoveries, new treatments and better diagnostics that provide hope.

But for the moment, there is no drug capable of curing or stopping Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, noted the Alzheimer Switzerland association in a press release on Friday. The conference will also focus on how to create an inclusive society that facilitates the social participation of patients and their loved ones.

The knowledge of people directly affected by the disease is systematically taken into account in the development of programs prepared by the sections of Alzheimer Switzerland. Organized every year since 1990, this major conference returns to Switzerland for the second time after 1998.

Around 156,900 people suffer from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia in Switzerland, according to estimates from the association. There are 33,800 new cases each year. The majority of people affected are women (66%). More than 8,000 people, or nearly 5%, suffer from Alzheimer’s or a related disease before their 65th birthday.
