As part of its Health Promotion program, the Espace sociocultural du Val du Sauzay invited the Nivernais network of diabetes and obesity stakeholders to hold a diabetes screening stand on the market.

The operation, carried out by the Résédia association, took place Thursday morning, in partnership with the Nièvre Primary Health Insurance Fund and the assistance of Aurélie Ciudad, a liberal nurse from Varzycoise.

Pancreas, overweight, sedentary lifestyle…

Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by the presence of excess sugar in the blood, called hyperglycemia. It can be due to the pancreas which produces insulin regulating the concentration of sugar in the blood, or to excess weight, a sedentary lifestyle, hypertension, etc. Excess sugar in the blood (beyond 1 .26 g) can cause diseases that are best avoided through preventive actions. This was therefore the objective of Résédia.

As people are mostly attentive to their state of health and “we don’t feel diabetes coming”, the specialists on duty welcomed forty volunteers at 11 a.m.

From each person, a drop of blood was taken and submitted to a tester immediately displaying the result. Five people were diagnosed positive and invited to consult a doctor, or 12.5% of people tested free of charge, a figure which fully justifies such operations.
