By rubbing our eyes, we force the emptying of the meibomian glands which produce this film. This is how after this rubbing, we can see a small tear appear. This salty liquid is beneficial for replenishing the lipid film of the eye.

Rubbing your eyes is a bit like getting a massage after staying in an uncomfortable position for too long. This is particularly true for overly focused workers, or for babies, who blink less because they often look attentively at their surroundings.
