Three cases of indigenous dengue fever were detected in the town of (Alpes-Maritimes) on Monday, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Regional Health Agency warned in a press release. These people contracted this benign disease most likely after tiger mosquito bites, the establishment added. At the beginning of August, the first case of dengue fever in the region had already been reported in the Alpes-Maritimes, in the town of La Colle-sur-Loup.

Mosquito control operations have been launched on public roads and even in private gardens in order to avoid new cases, the ARS indicated. Larval breeding sites and “adult” mosquitoes are targeted as part of this usual procedure. At the same time, other potentially infected people are being sought by the authorities, who are conducting an information campaign among residents. Hospitals, private doctors, pharmacies and laboratories are also being called upon to carry out screenings and treat sick people. A high fever, headaches and muscle pain are the main symptoms.

Mosquito control in after the floods

The very first case of indigenous dengue fever in was detected in Hérault on July 8. A total of nine cases were recorded last year in the Maralpin department, as well as six West Nile virus infections, detected during the summer. Around fifty cases of dengue fever were recorded throughout France in 2023.

For its part, following the severe weather on Monday morning, Cannes town hall also announced that it would be carrying out mosquito control campaigns as a precaution. “The humidity and damage caused by heavy rainfall are conducive to the proliferation of these pests, which are real vectors of serious diseases.”explains the Cannes municipality, targeting the flooded sector of République.
