Large rescue and security teams have been sent to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer to help the victims.

Around ten migrants died on Tuesday while attempting to cross the Channel and several others are in a very serious condition after their clandestine boat broke up off the coast of Boulogne-sur-Mer, the maritime prefecture said.

According to a source close to the case, the death toll reached 13, including 3 minors. A ship chartered by the State, the Minck, had spotted the boat in difficulty with more than 60 people on board and went to its aid as soon as it broke apart, Lieutenant Etienne Baggio told AFP. The resigning Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, is expected on site at 5 p.m., according to BFMTV.

Large rescue and security teams have been sent near the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer. According to the maritime prefecture, a rescue operation is underway for around fifty victims, some of whom require care, and medical teams have been dispatched to the deployed ships.

This is the deadliest shipwreck since the beginning of the year, which has already seen 25 people lose their lives on these crossings since January.

More information to come.
