Like every month, a new full moon can be observed in the sky. This happens on Thursday October 17, 2024 and what’s more, it will be a super moon!
After the “full harvest moon”, which illuminated mid-September coupled with a lunar eclipse, here comes the “full hunter’s moon”.
A moon that will be bigger and brighter
As you probably already know, a full moon occurs when the face of the Moon, facing the Earth, is entirely illuminated by the Sun. If the weather permits, we can observe some one every 29 days. And not all of them are the same.
Several types of unusual full moons exist, including supermoons. This is the case for that of October. This means that the star will appear brighter and bigger.
This super moon is that of “the hunter”. It can occur in October or November, the hunting season. The “hunter’s moon” follows the full harvest moon in September.
In Native American tribes, who gave names to the moons, it can also be called “migration moon”, “frost moon” or even “leaffall moon”details the Star Walk astronomical guide.
Based on the NASA reference work, the Old Farmers Almanachere are the names of the other full moons of the year 2024 :

How to observe it?
The “Hunter’s Moon” will be full for approximately three days. So start observing it from Wednesday October 16, 2024.
To see it well, it is better to look at it at sunset when it is close to the horizon. “During this time, the Moon appears larger and takes on a beautiful orange hue due to atmospheric refraction,” notes Star Walk.
This is because the Moon’s light must pass through a thicker layer of air. Therefore, “blue wavelengths are scattered by the atmosphere. Only red wavelengths reach us, so the Moon takes an orange or reddish tint »continues the specialized site.
The “hunter’s moon” will reach its peak this Thursday October 17, 2024 at 11:26 a.m.. And if you miss it, don’t panic: a new full moon takes place on November 15. This time it’s the “beaver moon.”
