After the climatic events of Tuesday October 8, 2024 and the following night, the city ​​hall of Bricquebec-en-Cotentin (Manche) is requesting a recognition of the state of natural disaster.

Residents invited to come forward

She invites the inhabitants having suffered damage linked to floods and land movements, to make themselves known in order to be able to identify all losses, whether suffered by individuals or businesses.

The effects of natural disasters are defined as “the uninsurable direct material damage having had as its determining cause the abnormal intensity of a natural agent, when the usual measures to be taken to prevent this damage could not prevent their occurrence or could not be taken.

The phenomena concerned:

  • Flooding (runoff and mudslides, overflowing of watercourses or torrential flooding, by rising water table)
  • Ground movements (rock falls, landslides, collapse of cavities, etc.)
  • Avalanches
  • Earthquakes
  • Episodes of drought rehydration of soils
  • Submersions marines
  • Cyclonic winds (in tropical overseas territories).

The damage caused by strong winds (storms, tornadoes, etc.), hail and the weight of snow do not fall within the scope of the natural disaster guarantee.

They are covered by the insurance contracts under the “Storm, snow and hail” guarantee known as TNG. These damages are directly compensated by insurers.

The mayor’s obligations:

  • Inform its citizens, through the press or posters, of the possibility of asking the town hall for recognition of the state of natural disaster.
  • Inform the victims that they must declare the damage suffered to their insurer (as in the case of a traditional disaster).
  • To apply for recognition of a natural disaster, the mayor must also identify the damage in his municipality by gathering the files of individuals and businesses.

After having established a descriptive report of the event, the town hall files a request for recognition of the state of natural disaster.

Individuals and businesses victims of a natural disaster must first declare their claim to their insurer under the conditions provided for in their insurance contract and contact the town hall so that it can initiate a procedure for recognition of the disaster. state of natural disaster.
